Scalloping August 15

Sandy & Gerry scalloped solo Saturday. As it turned out the weather was beautiful, scallops were plentiful and nothing ate us. The trip out Rocky Creek was a breeze with a big bow umbrella...Gerry steered. Dinner was fresh from the sea. We hope to go once more before the season's end.

Steinhatchee Scalloping Weekend

Last weekend we rented the Vaughn cabin in Steinhatchee and scalloped Hagen's Cove and Rocky Creek. On Saturday Carolyn, Steve, Nancy, Sandy & the Prez met at Hagen's Cove at noon. The day was beautiful and the tide was right but the scallops were simply not there. There were no power boats on the horizon and that is a pretty good indicator. Still, we paddled out and had a look.

It was good to be in the warm clear water again and Carolyn and Steve tried out their new canoe sail. We had to cite them for the new equipment, but honestly...they were pretty good at it : )

We loaded the boats and turned south to Rocky Creek since we had all day. By the time we paddled the distance the tide was low and we had grass in the face but scallops were plentiful there and Gerry and I gathered our limit. Nancy could have...would have, but she broke her mask then lost it.

When the tide is out at Rocky Creek it is way way out and if you're paddling a boat you might as well go home. It was time to wash off the salt and find food and drink! We did. (Right after Gerry changed Nancy's surprise flat tire.)

Sunday we packed up and returned to Rocky Creek which happened to be on the way home. The tide was perfect! We each gathered our limit for the day and called it a weekend. A very good weekend! The weather couldn't have been better and we had a mighty good time. We will try to schedule another day trip before the season ends, (since we have these fishing licenses and all). July Quarterly Meeting @ Oleno NOT

We met on a hot afternoon in July at Oleno State Park for our quarterly meeting. The plan was to put in at the end of Bible Camp Road and paddle down to Oleno State Park to take out and have a late day picnic / planning meeting. WRONG! Oleno's canoe launch was closed due to high water...They wouldn't let us put in or take out there. So we put our wallets back into our pockets and paddled up the Santa Fe from the end of Bible Camp Road.

Heads up...Citations WERE issued!

We had the picnic afloat and planned a couple of summer outings. Bill suggested a scalloping overnight trip to Steinhatchee the first weekend of August. It is happening, though, as it turns out, Bill might not be able to join us. Russ and Elayne reminded us that they are hosting the third quarter meeting on their Big Deck Oct. 3. Gerry and Sandy expressed interest in paddling the Alapaha if we can find it wet. Maria plans to do another Okefenokee-Suwannee Narrows-camp at Griffis Fish Camp weekend, probably right after the holidays.

So we didn't plan to wet a specific paddle really, but you all know how it is this time of year. The spiders and mosquitoes and heat and lightning have their ways with the rivers and we may or may not intrude (with little notice).

July Quarterly Meeting - Visitors Welcome

Our third quarterly meeting will be hosted by Maria on Sunday the 12th at Oleno State Park...gather at 2PM. Water levels will determine whether we shuttle up Bible Camp Road and paddle back to the park or just paddle up till the water gives out and back down. Bring a boat, a chair, a picnic supper, liquids, anything you might need to be comfortable /legal on such an outing. It could be hot...Oleno has a swimming area in case you want to wet yourself. Check the web site for directions and park admission fees http://www.floridastateparks.org/oleno/

Newnans Lake Early June Sunset/Full Moon Paddle

The full moon paddle was very serendipitous tonite...glad to be there. The sunset was sweet and the moon up high, Lake Newnan waters calm, a contrast to the events of this past few weeks. An eagle flew over with his catch, an osprey overhead and the great blue heron present as well. Our friends Tom and Pam joining us gave reminders of how precious friends are in our lives...indeed...
